The Tea: Attention Please.... the Legal Support Staff Have Something to Say.
And it is not pretty.
First of all, I would like to thank everyone who subscribed to The Tea after last week’s inaugural edition. An extra kudos to Sarah Cottrell (who hosts a Podcast featuring former lawyers) and Brian K. Hlady (an amazing Ottawa-based accountant) who supported this publication by becoming Founding Members.
As a result of all the new members from the last edition, we made a donation in the amount of $1,100 to LEAF. For those who do not know LEAF, it focuses on litigation, law reform and public education. In particular, the organization seeks to advance gender equity by challenging laws, policies and practices that discriminate against equality guarantees enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. You can make your own donation to LEAF online here. I am glad that my followers’ unwavering thirst for gossip has resulted in such a nice donation to LEAF. They truly do very good an important work.
The contributors to this edition also turned down my offer to provide them with the proceeds of new subscriptions arising from sharing their stories. As a result, we will be donating the funds raised from new subscriptions from this edition to Pro Bono Ontario.
Now, the reason you are all here. The Tea.
At the end of the last edition, and on social media, I put out a call for contributions from legal support staff. Boy oh boy did they respond. It seems like many of them have been waiting for a lawyer to ask them what they thought about their experience working with members of the legal profession for a long time. They did not hold back. Below I share some of their stories. I also add some of my observations and suggestions on how we might be able to do better in our interactions with those who support our practices.
