The Tea: The Data That I Did Not Know Existed
I used to think comparative data of Canada's largest law firms did not exist. Boy was I wrong. Let me share some data with you.
A few weeks back on LinkedIn I came across a post from an individual who was reporting on female lateral partner moves in the UK and the US. The post reported that the percentage of email lateral hires had increased between 2019 to 2022 from 28% to 34%. I commented on the post that I wish this type of data was available for Canadian Law firms.
Well, my wish was granted. It turns out that Pirical includes Canada in its database of legal professionals and law firms. Pirical relies upon publicly available information, in particular law firm websites, to monitor arrivals, departures and to track very interesting information such as gender statistics, attrition and even where certain firms tend to hire from and where departing lawyers depart to. It is a paid service utilized by law firms, corporations and news media to track this type of data.
The information available for Canadian firms is a bit more limited than what is available for most US and UK firms - primarily in the area of revenues since most Canadian firms keep anything regarding money and profits under lock and key. However, it is still a very interesting database to access - particularly for the data junkie like myself.
Here are my observations of the data on a first glace. I may publish additional articles based on this data as time goes on as I discover interesting trends. There is a cost to access the database on an ongoing basis and income from The Tea will assist in my ability to share my observations in the future.
